Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

Collects blood and urine samples, correctly identifies patients, transports specimens, and accessions specimens into the Laboratory Information system (LIS) to ensure accurate entry of patient information.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

Customer Service/Patient Care/ Human Resources. Evaluates and prioritizes workload for efficient delivery of services to ensure that guests are attended to in a timely manner. Transports patient urine specimens or other specimens collected on nursing units as required. Assists outpatients that report to the outpatient waiting room. Receives specimens in the LIS. Delivers specimens to the laboratory department for testing. Keeps the laboratory technologist informed of activities. Provides clinical orientation and supervision for students and new or less experienced laboratory personnel as assigned. Uses problem solving skills and persistence to attain an acceptable outcome.

Communication. Establishes and maintains a working relationship with the immediate supervisor for the position or shift worked to ensure efficient and effective open lines of communication. Establishes and maintains a line of communication with all staff. Promotes public relations by maintaining a professional image and conduct in interactions with other health care professionals, agencies and the community. Practices effective telephone skills. Participates in department meetings.

Technical Skills and Knowledge. Consistently verifies the identity of the patient being drawn and labels all specimens properly to ensure prompt processing of accurate patient information. Following prescribed procedures and using appropriate technique, obtains

blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture. Collects STAT and Urgent specimens within the established time frames. Performs capillary glucose tests. Demonstrates age specific knowledge for tests performed. Collects blood specimens and urine specimens for legal purposes. Establishes and maintains chain of custody for legal purposes. Uses laboratory information system (LIS) appropriately and efficiently.

Quality Assurance, Improvement and Control. Anticipates and recognizes errors. Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis. Performs and reviews Proficiency Testing. Participates in compliance with all regulatory agencies (i.e. CAP, JCAHO, CLIA and OSHA).

Personal and Professional Growth and Image. Completes Education lessons plans to expand personal knowledge in areas critical to job duties.

Attendance and Dependability. Punctual as defined by department policy to ensure that work is started and completed on time. Follows department rules regarding scheduling and schedule changes. Demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to meet departmental needs.

Financial Resources. Assists in cost control through efficient use of supplies to maximize allocated resources. practices inventory control and orders supplies as needed.

Compliance/Policy Development. Reads and follows all organizational and departmental policies and procedures to remain in good standing with the organization and to lead by example.

Performs clerical duties such as filing and report distribution to maintain normal operations of the lab.

Maintenance and Safety. Maintains assigned areas in a clean and orderly manner. Puts up supplies and stocks as needed. Follows policy for the Employee Injury, Infection Control, Hazard Surveillance and Chemical Hygiene programs. Participates in and recommends changes to the LIS and Downtime Test Management system.

Performance evaluation score of Meets Expectations or greater; Fewer than 5 occurrences in a rolling 12 month period; No disciplinary issues (counseling) within last 12 month period; Proficient at accessioning specimens, as assigned; Perform 3 CEUs per year

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: 6 months experience as phlebotomist

Pay Range

$14.08 - $19.36 /hour
